Why Juneteenth matters.
- On June 19, 1865 — two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation — federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to ensure the freedom of all enslaved people. That day became Juneteenth: the true independence Day of black America. A day of remembrance, resilience, and resolve. The 1865 Fest carries that spirit forward, right here in Chicago.
